The Kings XI Punjab will challenge the might of the Mumbai Indians in the 54th game of the Indian Premier League 2011 at the PCA in Mohali.

The two teams will like a win each and that will be entirely different reasons – the Mumbai Indians to be able to maintain their top spot and Punjab to be able to have an outside hope yet, of qualifying for the last four stage.

Punjab v Mumbai odds:
On paper and on the field, the Mumbai Indians (2/5 at Boylesports) have been head and shoulder above most of the teams, especially some of those down in the points table. The reason why Mumbai is at the number one spot and Punjab (2/1 at bet365) at ten, is the difference in all the three departments of the game. Mumbai Indians have out-batted, bowled and fielded most of their opposition and will be go into this game as favourites.

Ground and Pitch:
Punjab will hope that they can get the better of Mumbai Indians at home, avenging for their easy loss when they had played at the Wankhede stadium last week. The pitch has usually been easy on the batsmen, although it flattered to deceive in the previous one – Punjab managed only 119 while their opponents struggled to get there in the end.

Player News:
Mumbai Indians’ decision to get in Aiden Blizzard (4/1 at BetFred) seemed to be a good one as they finally got a batsman at the top of the innings, who could bat aggressively. Sachin Tendulkar (9/4 at BetFred), in the recent times, has preferred having such partners at the top of the innings, allowing him to play his natural game of milking the bowling around.

If Tendulkar can bat through the innings, then there is a scope for Kieron Pollard (8/1 at BetFred) to come in at four and try his hand at accelerating during the 10-15 over mark. Rohit Sharma (9/2 at bet365) has the ability to clear the ground later as well and this move could allow Pollard a tad more time at the crease in preparation for the playoffs.

Punjab haven’t had the full services of their captain Adam Gilchrist (10/3 at BetFred). He has had a couple of ducks to his name, which was followed by the eight-ball three in the previous match that put pressure on the middle-order. Shaun Marsh (10/3 at bet365) stuck it out once again but with David Hussey (5/1 at BetFred) showing no real signs of getting his form back, it is probably time to get in a replacement in the middle-order.

It wouldn’t be such a bad idea to have Dinesh Karthik (11/2 at Boylesports) opening the innings and Gilchrist bat down the order to shore up the middle-order. It will be something new for the captain, who has opened all his life, but given the situation that his side finds itself in, it may not be a bad idea to change things around.

Prediction:
Punjab will need to bat, bowl and field much better than they have all season to have any kind of a chance of competing against the Mumbai Indians.
