India took firm control of the second Test match of their series against West Indies at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata with both, the bat and the ball.

West Indies had slumped to 34 for the loss of both their openers in reply to India’s mammoth 631/7 declared when bad light stopped the play early.

The disciplines of the first Test and those lines and lengths were missing from the West Indian bowling today. While they had done a decent job in restricting the Indians on the first day on a flat-looking Eden Gardens, it went all India’s way on the second day.

Yuvraj Singh (25) was the lone casualty in the first session and his innings was that of travails and edginess. Probably armed with the knowledge that his Test match career is on the line, Yuvraj struggled against the West Indian pace bowlers, edging and missing and even getting hit on the body before making his way back, lbw.

The story of the day belonged to VVS Laxman, who notched up another century at the Eden Gardens to bring his average up to 110 at this ground. It was his 17th in Test match cricket and did enough to propel the Indian total towards the 600-run mark.

MS Dhoni became the third centurion of the innings after Rahul Dravid and Laxman, but he was fortunate to get there. Twice off the bowling of Kemar Roach, he nicked one to the wicket-keeper and on both occasions, he was saved by a no-ball. With the gods on his side, Dhoni went on to slam a 174-ball 144 before finally getting out – unsurprisingly, caught wicket-keeper off the bowling of Roach.

Laxman remained unbeaten on 176 as India declared at 631/7.

West Indies had 12 overs to negotiate before the fading light necessitated an early end. In that time, West Indies lost two wickets, Adrain Barath caught in the slips off Umesh Yadav and Kraig Brathwaite given out incorrectly, caught at short-leg.

India is currently at 3/10 (William Hill) to make it 2-0 at Kolkata while West Indies need a near-miracle, at 200/1 (SkyBet) to level the series here. A draw could be a more feasible option for the side, offered 3/1 (Stan James).
