Replying to the West Indian score of 590 in their first innings, the Indian top-order batsmen ensured that they all got starts. While Virender Sehwag did not carry on from his 37, Gautam Gambhir, Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar all made half-centuries to carry India to a good position by stumps.

Overnight 575/9, West Indies were bowled out for 590 when R Ashwin had Devendra Bishoo bowled off an ugly swipe. Ashwin ended the innings with a five-wicket haul to take his tally to 18 wickets in the series. If India manage to evade the follow-on mark, Ashwin will have another chance to increase his wicket-tally.

India were given a solid start by Sehwag and Gambhir, who added 67 in under 15 overs. Sehwag looked good enough to get much more than his 37 but an in-cutter from captain Darren Sammy sent his stumps for a walk.

Gambhir and Rahul Dravid were involved in a 71-run partnership for the second wicket before the Delhi opening batsman missed a pull shot and was deemed to be caught by the wicket-keeper. Replays showed that he was a good away from the ball and he would have been disappointed at having been given wrongly out.

Dravid was unusually positive and scored his 82 quickly. In the process, he also got to 13000 runs in Test match cricket before he was bowled off an inside-edge to Marlon Samuels. This was the second successive occasion he had been dismissed to a part-time bowler.

Sachin Tendulkar, one short of 100 international centuries, soon got to his half-century but was lucky to be still at the crease at stumps. His edge was dropped by the wicket-keeper Carlton Baugh and he remained unbeaten 67 when play was called off due to bad light. VVS Laxman was 33 not-out at the other end.

India is a good 309 runs away from the West Indian total and even if they were to get there, it would mean that they will need to bat the whole day tomorrow. If they do that, the probability of a result will gravely go down and a drawn game will look much more probable.

For now, Blue Square offers 1/10 for a draw, to 10/1 (Ladbrokes) for an Indian win. Surprisingly, despite still being ahead of India by 309 runs, West Indies are at 18/1 (bet365) to pull a win back.
