The first ODI between India and West Indies at the Barbati Stadium on November 29, will see the hosts without Sachin Tendulkar and MS Dhoni. Both, Tendulkar and Dhoni have been afforded rest before the potentially gruelling tour of Australia. Yuvraj Singh continues to remain out after revealing that he had a non-malignant tumour in his lung and the side will be led by Virender Sehwag.

The good news is that Sehwag (7/2 at Ladbrokes) will return to open the innings with Gautam Gambhir, while Ajinkya Rahane, who has done well in the limited opportunities that he has got so far, should bat three. There will be a scramble for places in the middle-order, with Virat Kohli (4/1 at BetFred), Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma and Parthiv Patel aiming at three of those slots. Or the selectors could get in all four of them and rest Rahane from the playing 11.

Ravindra Jadeja should occupy the all-rounder’s berth, while R Ashwin will be the other spinner in the side. Praveen Kumar and Vinay Kumar will be two pace bowlers but depending on what the management think of the track, there could be a place for an extra seam bowl in place of a batsman.

Simmons (4/1 at SportingBet) was in a rich vein of form in Bangladesh with a century and an 80 in the two games he played before hobbling out with an injury. Similarly Barath had fitness problems as well, but having recovered from his issues, he will open the innings with Simmons.

With Marlon Samuels (5/1 at Ladbrokes) coming off a man-of-the-series award in Bangladesh and Darren Bravo scoring back-to-back centuries in the Tests against India, the West Indian batting line-up has the fire-power to challenge India. The big question-mark is over their bowling.

While Ravi Rampaul carries the attack with the new ball and towards the end of the innings well, Andre Russell and/or Kemar Roach need to get their lengths right in India. The big talking-point is that of the presence of Sunil Narine, who has been included for the first time after his successful stint in the Champions League T20 this season.

With an economy of less than five runs per over in T20 cricket and 3.15 in List A matches, it will be a tester for the Indian batsmen who are renowned to play spin bowling well.

India (2/5 at Boylesports) has a good recent record at the Barbati Stadium, having won all three of their previous games here in the last four years. Chasing under lights is always easier at this ground given the dew factor that is usually at its worst in these Indian winter months, but a lot will depend on the pitch. For instance, in a game in January 2007, India had mustered up only 189 before bowling West Indies out for 169.

West Indies are 9/4 (bet365) to go 1-0 up in the series.
