A gritty West Indian side stalled the inevitable in the second innings of the second Test against India at Kolkata.

Following on after being behind 478 runs, West Indies showed a vastly improved performance in the second innings to end at 195/3 by the close of the day’s play. Darren Bravo (38) and Shivnarine Chanderpaul (21) were at the crease when the play was called off on the third day.

West Indies, who were 34/2 overnight in reply to the mammoth Indian total of 631/7, lost wickets regularly in the first session of the day’s play. There was no sign of the fight that had been on display in the first Test with the bats, as the batsmen came and went with alacrity.

Kirk Edwards and Shivnarine Chanderpaul departed within 12 runs from the start of the day’s play. The pair of Darren Bravo and Marlon Samuels doubled the total for the West Indians but just when their stand began to look good for the visitors, the left-handed Bravo got an inside-edge to Umesh Yadav that went on to his stumps. Bravo’s 30 was to be the highest-score of the innings.

Samuels was bowled by the same bowler off one that seemed to be jagging back into the batsman for most of its trajectory before pitching and going away from the pitch and breaking his stumps. The rest of the team fell away, to be bowled out for 153. Yadav ended with a three-wicket haul.

Following on, Kraig Bathwaite did not last too long at the start of the innings, but Kirk Edwards and Adrian Barath looked to have exorcised their demons from the first innings. They added a near-century run stand, both getting to half-centuries and seemed to have taken the West Indians towards safety on the day.

Two late wickets spoilt the day for the West Indies. First, it was Barath who was caught in the slips off Ishant Sharma, and then Edwards was declared out lbw to the same bowler to push them to 161/3. Bravo and Chanderpaul saw off the day’s play without further loss but they still trail India by 283 runs.

Boylesports offer 1/33 for what remains a foregone conclusion of an Indian win while West Indies is at 200/1 (BetFred) to win from this impossible angle. A draw is at 25/1 (bet365) but even that will be possible in case of inclement weather rather other on-field miracles.
