India will look to put the defeat in the previous game out of their focus when they take on West Indies in the fourth ODI of the series at Indore.

India’s (2/5 at Bwin) winning streak at home, which lasted 11 games, was finally broken at Ahmedabad by a resilient West Indian side. To be fair to the visitors, they had threatened to take control of two of the Test matches and one of the previous ODI, without going on to win it. It was a matter of time before the West Indies (23/10 at SportingBet) got the better of the hosts and it was at Ahmedabad that they won their first game on tour.

The home team may still go on to win the series but there are a few worrying signs. The top-order batting has been virtually non-existent, with the opening stands being worth 37, 3 and 8 in the three ODIs. Add that to Gautam Gambhir’s (4/1 at Blue Square) scores of 4, 12 and 0 and it translates into a perfect recipe for disaster. Suresh Raina has been no better with only seven runs to his name in the series so far.

The Indian management must be thanking Rohit Sharma (9/2 at SkyBet) for his single-handed batting efforts that have superseded the above rut. The team will know that it will be unfair to expect Rohit to continue exhibiting the same vein of form that has seen him score 514 runs in ODI cricket since June this year at an average of 128.5.

There will be change of personnel for the Indian team. The selectors have decided to rest Umesh Yadav before the tour of Australia and in his place, there is place for Irfan Pathan. There will be a toss-up between Pathan and Varun Aaron for the third pace-bowling option. The other possible change could be the selection of Ajinkya Rahane, but who will sit out is a question the selectors and the management will grapple with.

West Indies were dealt with a big blow when Darren Bravo was ruled out of the fourth game because of a hamstring injury. Among those in the wings, Adrian Barath (5/1 at Blue Square) is a tested option while Jason Mohammad is an inexperienced but an exciting all-rounder. The selectors also have an option to try out Kieran Powell, who had showed in the Tests that he can do a bit of hitting as well.

West Indies have similar top-order woes as India. The highest first wicket partnership for the tourists this series is 18 and Barath was replaced by Danza Hyatt (5/1 at BetFred) at the top of the innings in the previous game. It did not help them too much.

Fortunately for the West Indies, their middle and lower-middle order seems to be coming good in the series. In the second ODI, it was a combination of Kieron Pollard, Ravi Rampaul and Kemar Roach who got the side to 269. In the following match, captain Darren Sammy and Andre Russell bludgeoned the Indian attack in the last six overs to take the game away from the home team’s clutches.

The introduction of Sunil Narine also adds variety to the attack, although things may not be as easy for him as they were on his debut. He was a relatively unknown quantity then but having played against him in the third game, the Indian batsmen should have an easier time against him.

I will still put India as favourites to win this game but expect it to be another close game. Also expect the Indian top-order to at least get starts.
