Sri Lanka (11/8 at SportingBet) were unlucky not to win both their opening games. In the first against India, they kept themselves in the hunt by picking up wickets at regular intervals before the Indian numbers seven and eight pulled the side out of the mire.

Then in the Australia game, Sri Lanka pulled themselves out of a difficult situation through Angelo Mathews to get within five runs of a win. Unfortunately for them, they ran out of support for the all-rounder and went down to Australia.

This means that two games into the competition, the side has lost both their matches. While the long-winding nature of the tournament allows teams to make a comeback to make it to the final, another loss against India could turn that attempt into a mountainous climb.

Sri Lanka need their batting to fire from the very start as they look to put some pressure on India. Upul Tharanga has failed in both the games, given his propensity to nick the ball early in the innings but the good news for him is that the Adelaide track will not offer as much movement as the previous ones.

Dilshan’s starts are obviously welcome but he will look to now convert his 40s into something better while captain Mahela Jayawardene looks to get some form going in his return role as the captain.

The Indian (8/13 at Blue Square) problems on this tour, which also included the five-day format, have not been too dissimilar. Bad batting at the top has led them to lose all but two games so far. It was at Adelaide in the Tests that the top-order showed some batting form and then went on to win the ODI against Australia on Sunday as well.

This is why the Indian top-order could relish these conditions as well, especially against a bowling attack which is not as disciplined as the Australian.

Where this match could be won or lost will be with the ball and in the field. India have had a decent time with the ball while their fielding has been excellent in this shorter format. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, realised their folly in going into the game with an all-pace attack and brought in a spinner in the second match. They will hope to get some purchase out of the pitch but more vitally will need Lasith Malinga to strike early.

India will be favourites to make it three wins in four games but trust Sri Lanka to come out hard at the Indians. The world champions cannot afford to let up in the field.

The India v Sri Lanka 5th ODI of the Commonwealth Bank series will be played from 3.20 am GMT, February 12.
