India v Sri Lanka World Cup Final at Wankhede, Mumbai Preview and Tips

Co-hosts India and Sri Lanka had gone into the World Cup as favourites and it shouldn’t have come as a surprise that the two have entered the final of the tournament.

That their road to the final, filled with difficult pitches, socio-politically hyped up games and farewells to legends only added to the affair which will now culminate at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on April 2.

Sri Lanka (11/8 at Stan James) were blessed with a much simpler draw but that is taking nothing away from the way they have played. England were brushed aside in the quarter-final after they were left with no fuel in the tank following a run of six close games. New Zealand would have been blown away as well but for a middle-order collapse that made the game interesting. And yet, Sri Lanka ran home easy winners in the semi-final.

India (4/6 at BetFred), on the contrary, faced two of the biggest cricketing foes in recent times in their lead-up to the final; Australia and Pakistan. Both were tamed with clinical precision. Against Australia, India chased down 260, and in the Pakistan-game they managed to defend the same score, sparking off celebrations deep into the night.

It now boils down to which side staves off pressure better. Had it been any other Indian cricket team, the relief after the Pakistan-win it would have been a fair cause for concern given their low-profile, but effective opponents in the final. However, under MS Dhoni (10/1 at Boylesports) – who has himself been woefully short of runs – the side is different from the previous ones. Commitment, team-work and focus have been the keys to their continual success. With an astute coach like Gary Kirsten behind the scenes and a senior pro in Sachin Tendulkar (3/1 at Stan James) at the top of the order baying for a 100th international century, India will be favourites.

Where things could go wrong for the Indians is with their much-vaunted batting line-up. It was evident in both the games, quarter-final and semi-final, that beyond the top two, there is a fair chance of putting the batting under pressure. This is where the role of Yuvraj Singh (6/1 at Totesport) will become crucial. He has the experience, the form and the confidence emanating out of his all-round abilities to get a big one here.

Not that Sri Lanka will be pushovers. This is their second final in as many World Cups and third in the last five tournaments – a record bettered by only Australia. Tillakaratne Dilshan (7/2 at Totesport) is not only at the top of the batting order for the Lankans but also of the run-scoring pile in the tournament, while the much under-spoken Upul Tharanga (4/1 at BetFred) has a couple of centuries and a fifty.

These two aside, Kumar Sangakkara (7/2 at Stan James) also makes it to the top five in the batting charts, which could be a cause for concern for the Indian bowling which has often been accused of lacking penetration.

That said, Sri Lanka’s middle-order has been a bane. Mahela Jayawardene (5/1 at bet365) has struggled for most part of the tournament after his first match century – scoring just another 100 in the other five games – while Angelo Mathews (12/1 at SkyBet) may not play this game due to fitness troubles. Thilan Samaraweera’s (7/1 at SkyBet) batting is not too dissimilar from the one on exhibition in the middle of Pakistan’s innings at Mohali and this is where the Indians can make inroads.

At home, India will be favourites. Their record suggests that. But hey, unlike the final of the previous three World Cups, both teams will know that they will have their chances!
