England v Sri Lanka one-off T20I preview and bets from Bristol

England may have won the Test series against Sri Lanka and may also be the defending World T20 champions, but when they take on Sri Lanka in the one-off T20I at Bristol, they will know that there will be nothing to choose from between the two sides.

It is a new-look English (8/11 at Blue Square) side, which has a new captain and a deputy. Stuart Broad became one of the three captains that the English side has – one for each format – and Eoin Morgan’s elevation to being his deputy speaks highly of his rise in stock.

The English side contains some returns and some other new names Steve Finn and Jade Dernbach are two who come into the squad. Neither have played even one T20I so far. The two opening batsmen from the World T20-winning squad, Craig Kieswetter (7/2 at Blue Square) and Michael Lumb (4/1 at Boylesports) also return to the squad but the player many would be interested to have a look at is Samit Patel.

With Patel’s rotund figure and the ensuing fitness issues having always hindered his talent and hence stalled him for becoming a permanent member of the side, this could be a huge chance for him. His place in the final 11 could depend on how the track plays; Graeme Swann will be a definite first choice spinner.

Coincidentally, Sri Lanka (23/20 at SportingBet) have a new captain as well, although, their reasons are more fitness-related. Tillakaratne Dilshan has not yet recovered from that blow that Chris Tremlett delivered to him in the second Test match and in his place, Thilina Kandamby (10/1 at SkyBet) will lead the side. Not too many had seen that coming, especially after Kumar Sangakkara had led them in the third Test match.

As much as Kandamby’s presence and elevation to captaincy makes for big news, it is the recall of Sanath Jayasuriya (9/2 at BetFred) that will be watched with bated breath. Jayasuriya hadn’t been a part of the squad for two years in the ODIs and more than a year in the T20Is and at 42, his career seemed to be over. However, Dilshan’s injury and Upul Tharanga’s doping-related absence pushed the selectors into recalling the maestro. Interestingly, Jayasuriya retires after the first ODI that follows this T20I.

If the warm-up game between Sri Lanka and Worcestershire was anything to go by, Jayasuriya could be opening the innings with Mahela Jayawardene (4/1 at BetFred). The likes of Angelo Mathews and Jeevan Mendis could also get their chance down the order after their exploits in the tour game.

Despite what the odds say, I would have to say that Sri Lanka could still be favourites to win their first game on tour. They are much better in the shorter format of the game while touring outside the sub-continent and with Kumar Sangakkara (7/2 at Stan James) having regained his touch in the previous game, my money will be on a Sri Lankan win.
