Impressive England should beat Pakistan again

KP needs to stand up and deliver at Edgbaston
Related Articles

The second Test at Edgbaston will see England hungry for success after inflicting on Pakistan their second-worst defeat in their Test match history at Trent Bridge

Pakistan’s batting has been so disappointing that it is easy to realise why England go into the game as favourites (4/6 at Boylesports). And despite the return of Mohammad Yousuf to the Pakistani batting, it will not get easier for the side, especially given the break that Yousuf has had from cricket so far. Bwin offers 5/1 for a Pakistani win, and unless the English side collapses in much the same manner as Australia had at Headingley, it is difficult to see how Pakistan will win this one.

The selectors have called up Yousuf and despite all the confusion associated with his selection in the middle of the tour, it has been confirmed that he will play in the second game. However, Yousuf (4/1 at Boylesports to top-score for Pakistan) will need the other seniors, Salman Butt (4/1 at Totesport) and Imran Farhat (5/1 at Ladbrokes) to provide a platform for him. Losing early wickets and exposing the middle-order to the new ball is something that Pakistan needs to avoid in order to get into positions of strength.

Apart from Yousuf, there is a good chance that Yasir Hameed (13/2 at Blue Square) will also be selected for this game, and that could mean curtains for the two youngsters – Azhar Ali (13/2 at 888Sport) and Umar Amin (8/1 at Totesport).

England batted much better than Pakistan in the first Test and that was thanks to the two centurions, Eoin Morgan (8/1 at Coral) and Matt Prior (16/1 at Coral). Morgan, in particular, has been in the form of his life, and will be the batsman to dismiss. What also works in his favour is the fact that he bats much lower down the order, and by the time he is at the crease, the ball has ceased to swing for the likes of Mohammad Aamer and Mohammad Asif.

However, there are two other batsmen in the line-up who will be feeling the heat from not having scored too many runs. Kevin Pietersen’s (4/1 at Boylesports) recurring injury issues and Alastair Cook’s (5/1 at Ladbrokes) lack of confidence at the top of the innings means that they will need to try and get some runs under their belt before they get down to the Ashes. While their position in the side may not be under any threat, yet, the return of Ian Bell from his fracture could complicate matters for the pair.

Tips:
Favourites: England (4/6 at Boylesports)
Top England batsman: Kevin Pietersen (4/1 at Boylesports)
Top Pakistan batsman: Salman Butt (4/1 at Totesport)
