England v India 5th ODI preview and odds from Cardiff

They go to Chester-le-Street or to Southampton, or to the two venues in London, India fail to win games this tour of England. So when they will travel to Cardiff in Wales for the fifth and the final ODI of the series against England, the forlorn group of cricketers from India will want to eke out at least one win from their tour.

Not that it is going to be easy for India. Despite Eoin Morgan been ruled out of the series, and despite Stuart Broad suffering from a shoulder injury, the depth in the English squad should refrain India from feeling complacent about their chances. Not after they have lost the Tests 4-0 and the ODI series to love as well.

For most part of the ODI series, the roles have been reversed between the Indian batting and bowling. The batsmen have done a much better job than their bowlers in the limited overs version but England have almost invariably managed to chase down the target – with one game abandoned and one tied. For once, MS Dhoni would hope that he can win the toss and bat second, something that has never happened this series.

There have been positives to come out for India in the ODIs and the batting of Parthiv Patel (9/2 at Totesport) and Ajinkya Rahane (9/2 at Totesport) at the top of the order will warm the hearts. So will the return to form of the skipper Dhoni (8/1 at Blue Square), who had looked out of sorts in the Test matches. Suresh Raina (5/1 at Coral) finally got a big one in the fourth ODI but it was evident that his way of dealing with nerves and pressure is to pull a leg away and take a swipe over mid-wicket – a weakness that the English bowlers would look to exploit.

England too have seen the homecoming of a forgotten batsman, Ravi Bopara (6/1 at Blue Square). Bopara’s 96 won him the joint man-of-the-match award and it must have pleased him – and the selectors – to the punch. This was after he seemed to have been discarded away after the 2009 Ashes, but the comeback has been nothing short of spectacular.

With Craig Kieswetter (4/1 at Boylesports) firing at the top of the order and Alastair Cook and Ian Bell bringing their form from the Tests into the ODIs, it does look like the home team will be hugely favourites to trump India 3-0.

The one slight chink, though, is their shortened batting; with Morgan out, it is an inexperienced Ben Stokes at number five, with the bowling all-rounders from number seven. Even there, Broad will be absent and so, the tail does look slightly longer than before. It will be something that the Indians could be looking to target – if they still have their minds around in England, at the end of such a long and arduous tour.

England are 4/6 (SportingBet) to beat India, who go in at 11/8 (Totesport) to win their first game on tour. Rains should hopefully keep away from the game.
