It is a battle between the table-toppers and a winless side. Hurricanes (4/6 at Blue Square) have won all their four games and are almost through to the semi-finals of the Big Bash League. Brisbane (5/4 at Stan James) have won none and unless they can conjure up a miracle of gigantic proportions, they are out of the tournament.

Hobart have won all their four games convincingly. The beauty about their campaign so far has been their non-reliance on superstar batsmen – it’s been a collective effort from their batsmen and bowlers alike.

At 1/91 in 13 overs, with Chris Gayle still at the crease batting on 53, it would have been easy to expect a target or at least 160. Instead, Hurricanes conceded only 47 runs off the last seven overs and were set a chase of 139. They won with plenty left in their tanks.

Naved-ul-Hasan was the standout performer in that game, with a three-wicket haul and that pushed him to the top of the bowling charts with 11 sticks in the tournament. The next best is only seven wickets – and that is another Hurricanes bowler, captain Xavier Doherty.

Before that, Hobart beat Perth in a low-scoring opener when they defended only 140, walloped Sydney Sixers by 42 runs and edged Adelaide out by 14 runs to notch three wins in succession.

Travis Birt (7/2 at Ladbrokes), who guided the side with a 15-ball 35 in the previous game and Owais Shah will be the batsmen to watch out for Hurricanes.

Brisbane were hit by Daniel Vettori’s injury early in the tournament. This was followed by the departure of their other overseas batsman, Brendon McCullum, to play in his home T20 series. And when Roelof van der Merwe was banned for the previous game after failing a roadside alcohol breath test, it meant that Brisbane went into the game against Adelaide Strikers without any foreign players. They lost the match easily.

In a way, without too much pressure on Heat given the improbable chance of qualification for the knock-outs, it could only spur the side on to do better. Van der Merwe (8/1 at SkyBet), a tough competitor on most occasions will be fired up after his tryst with the law, while the presence of Ryan Harris and Matthew Hayden should lift the dressing room.

While Hobart will be favourites to win this game given how they have played so far, I will not be surprised if Brisbane register a shock victory here.

The Brisbane Heat v Hobart Hurricanes Big Bash League game will begin at 8.30 am GMT on January 6.
