Both sides are struggling this season, with Brisbane having lost all their three games, while Adelaide with only one win from their three.

The Strikers (4/5 at Coral) had a decent start to their campaign when they came away trumps against Melbourne Renegades by 67 runs. Two games later, they are still stagnant on that one win. Heat, on the other hand have yet to run a team close and a loss here will end their Big Bash League campaign this season.

To be fair to the Strikers, they have done reasonably well in all their games but Chris Gayle’s superb century and an excellent bowling show on a reasonably difficult wicket by Xavier Doherty and Naved-ul-Hasan Rana halted their progress.

With the Strikers conceding more runs than they should, they could look to change things around in their attack. Already leg-spinner Bryce McGain has been left out of the squad and in comes James Muirhead. One other change, however, is a forced one with Tom Cooper (8/1 at Ladbrokes) taking up the gloves after regular ‘keeper Adam Crosthwaite is injured.

Brisbane (6/5 at bet365) will need their all-rounder Dan Christian (6/1 at Boylesports) to come good. He was bought in the IPL auction last year by Deccan Chargers for almost a million bucks and he will do well to justify the faith some of the scouts around the world have pinned on him for this format of the game.

Peter Forrest (5/1 at Paddy Power) will captain the side in the absence of James Hopes but the bigger worry for the side will be the absence of Brendon McCullum. McCullum missed the previous game because he was away playing in the New Zealand T20 league and Heat will hope for him to come back as soon as possible

With Daniel Vettori ruled out of most games this season, Heat have brought in South African all-rounder Roelof van der Merwe. How he adapts to these conditions so quickly will be a big factor in his success.

The Brisbane Heat v Adelaide Strikers Big Bash League game will begin at 8.30 am GMT on January 3.
