Eight teams; Melbourne Stars, Melbourne Renegades, Sydney Thunder, Sydney Sixers, Brisbane Heat, Adelaide Strikers, Perth Scorchers and Hobart Hurricanes will compete in the first edition of the Big Bash League.

Former international legends like Shane Warne and Matthew Hayden will don their respective teams’ colours in the tournament. Warne (16/1 at William Hill to end as the top tournament bowler), had an inauspicious start to his return when he burnt his fingers in a cooking accident but is said to be fit enough to play the first game. He will represent the Melbourne Stars (9/2 at William Hill to win the Big Bash League).

The player most favourite to end the tournament with the highest runs is Chris Gayle (7/1 at William Hill). Although out of the national side because of a tiff with his cricket board, he has had an excellent run in this format of the game. His appetite for runs during this year’s IPL and Champions League T20 bear ample testimony.

Brad Hodge comes second in the top-run getters’ list (14/1 at William Hill) but it is reported that he is injured and may not feature in many of the games. Gayle aside, Brisbane Heat’s Brendon McCullum is the most favourite (14/1) non-Australian to end the tournament with the most runs.

Some of the current Australian international players like David Hussey (16/1 top bat), Cameron White (top bat 33/1) and Dave Warner will all be a part as well. However, some like Warner and Shane Watson may need to leave the tournament midway for their national duties – Australia take on India in a four Test match series starting December 26.

Shaun Tait and Shahid Afridi are a close one-two to end the tournament with the most wickets. While William Hill offers 10/1 for Tait to emerge as the top wicket-taker in the Big Bash League this season, Afridi is 12/1. Afridi’s previous experience in the erstwhile KFC Big Bash T20 tournament should stand him in good stead.

Brett Lee (16/1) is fit again and should feature in most games for his Sydney Sixers. Daniel Vettori has a hamstring problem and he may need to miss a couple of games, while last minute addition, English pace bowler Jade Dernbach, is a good 20/1 (William Hill) to end with most wickets.

The Melbourne Stars, captained by White are favourites to lift the inaugural tournament, 9/2 at William Hill, with the Andrew McDonald-led Renegades only marginally behind (5/1). The Brisbane Heat is at 5/1 to win the Big Bash League 2011-12, followed by Adelaide Strikes (5/1), Sydney Thunder (6/1), Sydney Sixers (7/1), Hobart Hurricanes (7/1) and Perth Scorchers (8/1).

The tournament begins with the first game between Sydney Sixers and Brisbane Heat at the Sydney Cricket Ground on December 16.
