He was 80 and died after suffering from illness. D'Oliveira played in 44 Test matches for England and scored almost 2500 runs at an average of 40. He also took 47 wickets with his medium-pace bowling and further featured in 367 first class matches. In 1968, he was in the middle of a huge controversy when his team, England, had to call their tour of South Africa off when the latter’s government had refused to accept the presence of the player on grounds of his race. This was the beginning of the end of South Africa in the world of sports and they were banned for more than two decades from playing international sports in 1969. D'Oliveira had earlier not been able to make it to the South African team because of the issues for non-white cricketers and he moved to England to play for Worcestershire. Gerald Majola, the Cricket South Africa CEO said, “’Dolly’, as he was known around the world by an audience that went far beyond the game of cricket, was a true legend and a son of whom all South Africans can be extremely proud.”The South African and the English side already compete in the Basil d’Oliveira trophy, which is won by the team that wins the Test series between the two sides.
