Batting-wise, it has been a shocking couple of games for Bangladesh. Chasing a target of 136 in the opening T20I, Bangladesh were restricted to 85 in their 20 overs. And this was followed by an even more abysmal performance with the bat, when they fell away to 91 all out in the opening ODI. Tamim Iqbal was sorely missed in the T20I but even his presence did not thing to lift the batting morale in the first ODI.

The hosts will take heart from their bowling though. The bowlers have been able to tie the opposition down thanks to the slow nature of the pitches but the batsmen have let them down. Shakib al Hasan continues to shackle the Pakistani batsmen while Abdur Razzaq is the other bowler that Misbah and co. have not been able to get away.

The strength of the Pakistani side stems from their all-round prowess. Mohammad Hafeez (7/2 at SportingBet to top-score for Pakistan) and Shahid Afridi give them depth and with a superb all-rounder like Abdul Razzaq benched, it is no surprise that they are winning almost everything.

On the flip side, Hafeez has had his starts but scores of 23, 5, 4, 83, 27, 14 and 22 in the last seven games do not do justice to his abilities. His bowling continues to demand questions of the batsmen. Afridi has picked up 18 wickets in the last six games with his runs from the number eight position being an added incentive.

Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim (5/1 at BetFred) pointed out that the pitches at home were not providing his side any home advantage. This is a surprising statement given Bangladesh’s preference towards having pitches that assist spinners. 11 of the 15 wickets that fell in the previous game went to the slower bowlers and poor batting rather than the pitch seemed to be at fault for Bangladesh’s capitulation.

Blue Square offers 1/6 for a Pakistani win to 6/1 (Boylesports) if Bangladesh can make it 1-1. Pakistan should make it three wins in a row on this tour.

Bangladesh v Pakistan 2nd ODI starts from 07.30 am GMT.
