It was an abysmal performance from Bangladesh (16/1 at BetFred) in the first Test match of the series. They followed up their losses in the T20I and the ODIs with another poor batting display and followed it up with a feeble bowling show.

The result of that was an easy innings and 184 runs victory for Pakistan.

At 47/5 on the first day of the game, another sub-100 total beckoned for Bangladesh. That they were able to even get to 135 was thanks to number eight batsman Nasir Hossain’s 41. In the second innings, there was some improvement but it was not enough to make Pakistan bat again.

Pakistan (1/4 at Blue Square to win this game) have had it easy this tour. The one way to put it is that despite not being challenged, they have done all that one could have expected from them under the given conditions. There were three centurions, one of whom, Younis Khan (7/2 at Blue Square), went on to slam a double century and the bowlers did not give too much away.

Abdur Rehman, who did not have too many chances before the first Test, went on to grab seven wickets. The other spinners supported him well.

Bangladesh have made a change to their squad but it has come in rather strange circumstances. Mohammad Ashraful, who scored 1 and 0 in the match, was dropped from the team for the second game but neither the coach nor the rest of the side had any idea about it. It was only after the coach announced that Ashraful was part of the side that the selectors decided on giving him the boot.

Ashraful aside, Tamim Iqbal (4/1 at Boylesports) will go into the game under a lot of pressure given his poor form. If he can get off to a reasonable start, then the rest of the order can try and build on it. His top-score, however, in the last six innings he has batted in is only 15 – hardly a statistic that provides encouragement.

Pakistan will look to seal a convincing win in this game as well to end the year on a high.

The Bangladesh v Sri Lanka 2nd Test will be played at 3.30 am GMT from Saturday, December 17.
