The last time New Zealand won a Test match against Australia was way back in 1992-93. One needs to go back further for a Test match win for New Zealand in Australia. It has been 26 years since New Zealand went on to win a five-day game down under. With a record as one-sided as this, it is no surprise that Australia (1/1 at Boylesports) are favourites to win this game.

New Zealand (11/2 at SkyBet) could have an outside chance though. Their opponents will go into the game without the presence of five of their key players including a couple of top-order batsmen and three pace bowlers. On a pace-filled and seaming Gabba track, this loss of experience could get more pronounced and the Kiwis could get their opportunities.

Peter Siddle will lead the attack, with at least two of James Pattinson, Mitchell Starc and Ben Cutting expected to make their debut.

The buzz is that Australian captain Michael Clarke could go into the game with a four-pronged pace attack but he will do well to look back at the previous game played here. It had ended with 10 wickets going down on the first day and 13 in the remaining four days. The skippers of both teams will pray for a much more sporting wicket than that track.

The onus will, however, be on the Australian batsmen. Ricky Ponting’s (4/1 at Boylesports) form will be under scrutiny. So will Brad Haddin’s batting. Michael Hussey (5/1 at Blue Square) came off a man-of-the-series performance in Sri Lanka but failed in South Africa. How the trio go with the bat will also be crucial to the side’s chances.

The Kiwi batsmen should be confident despite the potentially difficult nature of the pitch. They go into the game with three centuries between them in the tour match – Brendon McCullum (4/1 at Blue Square) in the first innings and Ross Taylor (4/1 at Boylesports) and Jesse Ryder in the second. Australia A’s bowling attack in that game wasn’t too different from what they will take on in the first Test, which will fill them up with further confidence.

For New Zealand, Chris Martin will spearhead the pace bowling department with Doug Bracewell and Tim Southee expected to shore it up further. Bracewell’s excellent all-round show in the tour game and his five-wicket haul in his debut Test match against Zimbabwe should be enough to get him a place in the playing 11.

Australia could scrape home to a win in this one.
