New Zealand were bowled out for 150 in their first innings on a grass-laced track in the Hobart Test. James Pattinson, who had destroyed the Kiwis in the second innings of the first Test match with a five-wicket haul, returned to torment the tourists. He bagged another five-for as New Zealand lost six wickets before lunch.

There was enough juice in the pitch to interest all the pace bowlers but the shots that the batsmen played showed them in a poor light. Martin Guptill was out trying to flick the ball towards mid-wicket when he should have shown a straight bat, captain Ross Taylor offered no shot to a ball jagging back into him and a rather subdued Brendon McCullum lost his patience and edged one behind the wickets.

There was some resistance from the middle and lower-order with Dean Brownlie scoring another half-century. He was supported with 40-run stands by Doug Bracewell and Tim Southee but that was only enough to get them to 150. Still it was a major recovery from a score of 60/6 that they were at one stage.

Later, Australia came out and lost Phil Hughes to an edge to the slips. Chris Martin was the bowler again, having got him out in both the innings of the first Test match.

When bad light and rain stopped play early, Australia had 12 runs on the board for the loss of Hughes’ wicket. Usman Khawaja joined Dave Warner before play was called off.

Blue Square now offers 1/5 for Australia to win this one. Unless New Zealand strike early and multiple times tomorrow morning, their 8/1 (SkyBet) odds are going to lengthen. The only hope of a drawn game (9/1 at bet365) is if rain continues to play a major role in the remaining four days.
