This India-Australia first Test is a part of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, and will begin from December 26. India are the current holders of the Border-Gavaskar trophy, having won the series in both, 2008 and 2010.

However, India (12/5 at Sportsbet.com.au) have never won a Test series in Australia and that is a bastion they will like to conquer. The last time they toured Australia, they went down 0-2 in the series before winning the third Test match. The fourth game ended in a draw and that gave Australia the series 2-1.

In 2003-04, India took a 1-0 lead before they lost the third Test match to allow Australia to make a comeback into the series. This was followed by a high-scoring draw in the fourth game that allowed the Aussies to escape with another tied series. Australia is at 105/100 (LuxBet) to win the first Test match.

This time around, the experts have called it India’s best chance to win a series in Australia. However, a lot will depend on how they play at the Melbourne Cricket Ground for this first Test match where the bounce will be much steeper than what the Indians are used to facing.

If India can survive this initial test, things will become better in terms of getting used to the conditions.

However, for that they need their batting to quickly adapt to the bounce. Virender Sehwag (7/2 at Sportsbet.com.au) is struggling for runs but it is difficult to predict how he goes in the cauldron of a Test match while Rahul Dravid's form should ease the batting woes.

Sachin Tendulkar could be distracted by his impending 100th international century while VVS Laxman's excellent batting against Australia should make it easier for the captain.

Australia have their injury issues but the good news is that Shaun Marsh is fit and should play the first Test match. He will bat at three with debutant Ed Cowan (4/1 at Sportsbet.com.au) to open the innings with Dave Warner and Ricky Ponting, Michael Clarke and Michael Hussey will follow.

The Australian bowling attack will be led by Peter Siddle while James Pattinson and Ben Hilfenhaus will be the support cast. Nathan Lyon will be the sole spinner in the side.

The Australia v India 1st Test match will be played from 0.01 am GMT on Monday, December 26.
