Sam Waley-Cohen has played down the chance of Long Run beating Kauto Star in the 2012 Cheltenham Gold Cup at this year's Festival.

And he is unashamedly making it clear that his amateur status is not an issue and that were it to be then he wouldn't be riding the current champion.

Long Run is 5/2 to win the Gold Cup at Cheltenham with bet365 while Kauto Star can be backed at 4/1.

He said: "So far Long Run has produced two terrific runs at Haydock and Kempton. He has been rated 182 and ran to about 181. People said we had made too much use of him at Haydock and not enough at Kempton and so you tend to say 'Come on chaps - what's that about.'

"The thing is you can't analyse absolutely every race. You can over-analyse so it's best to make your plan and do your very best to execute it on the day.

"We go to Cheltenham full of hope because in this game you are a fool if you don't and I think everybody accepts the hill will work in his favour."

Addressing the issue of his amateur status, he t explained: "I am very fortunate to be riding some of the best horses in training. I have the time to work the gym and stamp the roads running at the weekends.

"There isn't a problem but if there were I think the connections would make it clear that couldn't continue but it's not a problem."
