Victor Chandler forced to slash their odds to 11/4, with the reigning champion set to have a run at Kempton on Saturday

Imperial Commander is being prepared to defend his Cheltenham Gold Cup crown next month, while Khyber Kim is being aimed at the Champion Hurdle, in which he was second last season.

There has been plenty of money on last year's winner retaining his crown, with Victor Chandler now offering 11/4 about the favourite, with Long Run available at 6/1 and Kauto Star a 7/1 shot.

Imperial Commander will be put through his paces over two miles at the Sunbury track at 1.15pm, before racing begins at 2pm, while Khyber Kim will gallop 15 minutes earlier at 1pm.

The latter was fourth to Binocular in the Christmas Hurdle there last month on his belated seasonal reappearance. Imperial Commander has not raced since winning at Haydock in November.

He missed the King George VI Chase through injury, but showed his well-being with a two-mile spin round Warwick last week.

“Things have gone really well since Imperial Commander went to Warwick. He worked again this morning, just a gentle one at home, and he’s working on Saturday,” said Nigel Twiston-Davies.

“Khyber Kim is very good and is on his way back to Cheltenham.”

Kempton managing director Amy Starkey added: “Racing Post Chase day is one of our two showpiece occasions in the calendar.

“Having the Cheltenham Gold Cup winner hero galloping over two miles will be a special bonus for our spectators.”
