Long Run's Gold Cup win capped a profitable week for punters at the 2011 Cheltenham Festival

Victory for Long Run sealed a brilliant week for Festival punters, as Ladbrokes estimate the betting industry has been clobbered for upwards of £20 million.

Nicky Henderson's horse was sent off the 7/2 favourite as punters celebrated in the Cheltenham sun to leave the bookies nursing savage wounds.

David Williams of Ladbrokes said: "What a difference a year makes. Last year we were laughing but this year we're crying into our empty satchels. It's been desperately bad.

"The punters are carrying the cash off the course in cranes. Wednesday went our way but on balance we've had a miserable time during the biggest week of the betting year.

"The roars of the happy punters will give us nightmares long into the Summer. We can't get out of the Cotswolds quickly enough."

Amongst the worst results for the layers were Hurricane Fly and Quevega on Tuesday, Chicago Grey on Wednesday, Big Buck's and Junior on Thursday, and Bobs Worth on Friday - before Long Run sealed their fate.

Long Run is already the 5/2 favourite to defend his crown in next year's Cheltenham Gold Cup.
