Champion Bumper: Best (and Worst) Value Bets

What are the current best-value bets - and worst - for this year's Champion Bumper?

Best Value:
I might be attempting the impossible in choosing between Willie Mullins' plethora of entries, but there could be some value in taking the 14/1 (Blue Square) on his CADSPEED.

Why Mullins' entries you might ask? Well, the trainer has taken this prize six times since its inauguration in 1993, so he's knows a thing or two about training the winner, and he must be a short price to win it again this year as his squad looks to have astonishing strength in depth. At the time of writing, he has a staggering six horses quoted at 16/1 or less (in no particular order): Quel Esprit, Gagewell Flyer, Morning Supreme, Quadrillion, Cadspeed and the current ante post favourite Quinola Des Obeaux.

More often than not, money talks in these type of races so you have to respect the current market leaders (Dunguib in particular looks rock solid at around 7/1), but it's interesting to note that Mullins' last two victories have been with horses that the market suggested were the stable's lesser lights, so don't let Cadspeed's price put you off.

Granted, he hasn't been as precocious as some of his stablemates - he was beaten on his first two starts - but he has been a revelation in winning two bumpers at Gowran Park by an aggregate 41 lengths. Both of those races were on heavy ground, but the prospect of better ground at Cheltenham doesn't worry me as he shows plenty of speed at home while, having had four runs, he has the necessary experience to cope with the hurly burly of this race.

The British challenge looks thin on the ground to say the least, but one who could give the Irish something to think about is BENBANE HEAD - currently 44 on Betfair. I saw him win on his British debut at Uttoxeter where he revelled in the desperate conditions. If the mud's flying at Cheltenham, he could well run into a place at big odds.

Worst Value:
Quinola Des Obeaux has made all to win two bumpers at Punchestown and Cork and, although impressive on both occasions, he didn't have much to beat in a sub-standard five runner event last time. His position at the head of the market (as low as 6/1 in places) may be based more on home reputation than on the actual merit of his form.
