Coral worried by number of strong favourites at Cheltenham

Bookmakers are expecting over £600 million to be staked over the four days of the Cheltenham Festival, starting tomorrow, and Coral have admitted that they are running scared of the number of strong favourites competing in the big races.

Dunguib is odds-on for Tuesday’s Supreme Novice’s Hurdle, Master Minded is a heavy favourite in Wednesday’s Queen Mother Champion Chase, and Kauto Star is just 8/13 to win the Gold Cup on Thursday.

That trio, plus a number of other well backed horses in the other 22 races this week, could result in millions of pounds being paid out by bookies, and Coral's David Stevens told Bettingpro:

"The good news for the bookies is we're expecting turnover to be a recession-busting £600 million this week; the bad news is we may not get to keep much of it.

"From Dunguib in the opening race, to Kauto Star in Friday's Gold Cup, and reigning champions like Big Buck's and Master Minded in between, this year's Cheltenham Festival sees more hot favourites line up than ever before."
