For many horse racing punters, the Cheltenham Festival is the most eagerly-awaited meeting of the year - and the one they like to bet on more than any other.

It serves as a natural climax to the jumps season, with the preceding four months being all about building up to those four big days in mid-March.

Backing winners at Cheltenham is priceless

Those who bet on horse racing love nothing more than backing a winner at Cheltenham, which they see as a battle between themselves and the bookmakers to see who will come out on top.

It’s possible to win big money on the Cheltenham Festival - and there are several ways to go about it.

The first is to play the long game and back your selection ante-post. This could mean identifying a horse for a certain race months in advance, maybe even a year, and getting your money on early at odds much bigger than the S.P. will be on the day.

The second option is to wait until you know the final runners, make your choice and then put your money down. You may have formed a good idea of which horse you think will win the Champion Hurdle or the Gold Cup and then it’s all about getting the best price available.

Handicaps at Cheltenham often offer the best value

The third scenario is to seek out some value in the handicaps because, with 27 races taking place at the Cheltenham Festival, you know there will be some winners starting at big odds.

Take 2013 for example. The winners included Golden Chieftain (28/1), Medinas (33/1), Flaxen Flare (25/1), Holywell (25/1) and Same Difference (16/1). All of these came in the handicap races and winners at such big prices are common.

The online bookmakers, whom you can visit through your PC, tablet or mobile device, offer a vast range of markets to choose from on the Cheltenham Festival.

You can bet win or each-way and many punters enjoy accumulator bets with the potential to get a large return from a small stake.

Plus, you can take advantage of their promotions and money-back offers. An online bookmaker will, for example, often give you more favourable place terms than if you had visited one of their shops.

And those who bet on the Cheltenham Festival online can usually help themselves to bigger odds than the starting price. Most bookmakers offer Best Odds Guaranteed, which means if you take a price before the race and your horse drifts out to a bigger S.P. you will still be paid out at the greater odds.

When you have placed your bet, you will then have the chance to watch the race at that bookmaker’s website via their live streaming service.

If you enjoy betting on Cheltenham you have come to the right place. There will be a flow of information on this site right the way through from the autumn until the tapes go up for the start of the opening race of the meeting.
