Former welterweight and light-welterweight champion Ricky Hatton has confirmed his retirement after a glittering 14-year career.

The 32-year-old has not fought since his crushing two-round battering at the hands of Manny Pacquiao in May 2009, and has often refused to officially rule out a return to the ring. However, Hatton has now confirmed in an interview with his official website that he will not be making a comeback, and he will instead concentrate on his career as a promoter.

Hatton said: “I am very upset. It's a very sad day for me.

“I know it is the right decision, though. I've known it was the right thing to do for 18 months to be honest.

“It's a bit of a relief to finally do it. It's been hovering over my head for such a long time. These last two years have been really frustrating. I hit rock bottom and it almost drove me insane.

“There's nothing more I love than training for a fight but I have no dreams left now.”

Hatton, who retires with a 45-2 record, won his first world title in June 2005 when he defeated Kostya Tszyu for the IBF light-welterweight champion, and moved up to welterweight in May 2006 when he beat Luis Collazo for the WBA title in Boston.
Victories over Juan Urango and Jose Luis Castillo followed as he became arguably Britain’s most popular sportsmen, with thousands of fans following him across the Atlantic for his fights in the United States, and that led to a December 2007 showdown with Floyd Mayweather in Las Vegas to determine boxing’s pound-for-pound number one. However, Hatton came up short as he was stopped in the 10th round by the WBC welterweight champion.

He made his return in May 2008 by beating Juan Lazcano in front of a 55,000-strong crowd at the City of Manchester Stadium, home of his beloved Manchester City, and followed that up with a comprehensive win over Paulie Malignaggi later that year. Hatton made another tilt at becoming pound-for-pound number one when he returned to Las Vegas in May 2009, but he suffered a brutal knockout loss to the Filipino superstar in what has proved to be his final bout.
