Over five times more money has already been wagered on the outcome of Ricky Hatton’s fight against Floyd Mayweather than on his victory over Kostya Tszyu, Ladbrokes reports

In excess of 80 per cent of all bets have been on the Mancunian-the outsider for the first time since he beat Tszyu in 2005- to upset the odds.  The Hitman by Knock Out or Technical Knock Out, available at 4/1, has also proved popular.

Ladbrokes spokesman, Nick Weinberg, said: “In terms of betting, Hatton versus Mayweather is the biggest fight ever.  Many observers didn’t rate Hatton’s chances going into the fight with the legendary Australian. The big players came on for Tszyu but Hatton’s supporters backed their man to the hilt. But all that pales into insignificance when compared to this weekend’s bout. The boxing world has been waiting for this for a number of years and the contrast between the pair’s character and demeanour only adds to occasion. We normally see the vast majority of money gambled in the 24 hours prior to a fight. But punters have been wagering on the bout in increasing numbers ever since it was announced.”

The challenger is 3/1 for the sports personality of the year award. Amir Khan is 1/7 to beat Graham Earl when they meet on Saturday night.
