Hatton v Mayweather Tips: Weigh-In with “Pretty Boy” at 11/10

This is the one we’ve all been waiting for; the aptly named “Undefeated” fight between pound for pound king of the ring and world welterweight champion "Pretty Boy" Floyd Mayweather (38-0) and two-time world champion Ricky "The Hitman" Hatton (43-0) for the world welterweight championship. Earlier this year, Mayweather kept his perfect record intact by earning a split decision victory over Oscar De La Hoya in Las Vegas. In June, Hatton maintained his own “undefeated” tag when scoring an impressive four round stoppage over Jose Luis Castillo in Las Vegas to retain his junior welterweight title.

Someone's 0 has got to go here and punters have been lumping on Hatton in the sort of patriotic style normally only reserved for the likes of the England football and cricket team.

Bookmakers in general report that around 80% of the best taken so far have been for the Mancunian star, with Ladbrokes  (free £25) going 11/8, Paddy Power (free £30) 5/4 and Pinnacle 28/15.

However, it's hardly the case that no-one will back Mayweather. Stan James (free £25) are offering 4/7 and Paddypower has the best odds on Mayweather at 8/13.  The draw is a best-priced 22/1 with sportingbet.

But that’s not the only way that punters have been siding with Hatton. Boylesports report plenty of support for him in their BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award market and have subsequently cut his price from to11/4. Obviously, with the BBC vote taking place on Sunday evening, Hatton would boost his chances of winning the award with victory in Las Vegas, so it make would make sense to back him in this market rather than at the shorter odds to win the fight. If you decide to go down this route, Boylesports (£100 free) have Hatton at 11/4 behind market leader Lewis Hamilton, who is a best-priced 4/9 with StanJames.

As for a prediction, I‘ll be routing for the Englishman of course but I can‘t get myself to back him. Sure, his style of boxing will give the American plenty to think about, especially in the early rounds. “I’m going to knock him out”, says Hatton. Good luck Ricky! His opponent is probably the most athletic boxer in the profession with a rare combination of lateral movement, foot speed and hand speed. That should allow him to pile up the points early and he will then be in a position to cruise to victory. That isn't to say that Mayweather can't be beat. He can, but Hatton would have to fight the bout of his life to win and connect with enough clean combinations to win seven out of 12 rounds and, although he’s got heart and courage in abundance, I just can’t see it. Providing he doesn't succumb to cuts (to which he’s prone), I can see Hatton lasting the distance but, by then, Mayweather will have done enough to win.
