Floyd Mayweather makes his return to the boxing ring tonight, taking on Miguel Cotto in a light-middleweight fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

This will be Mayweather’s first outing since his controversial fourth-round stoppage of Victor Ortiz last September, and it will be his final fight before he serves a 90-day prison sentence. The 35-year-old’s incarceration was delayed in order for this fight to take place, and he is the big 1/7 favourite with William Hill to head to Clark County Detention Center with his unbeaten record intact.

Opponent Cotto has rebounded from defeats to Antonio Margarito and Manny Pacquiao by embarking on a three-fight win streak, and the Puerto Rican fighter is confident that he can shock the world by becoming the first man to knock off Mayweather. The bookmakers do not share that confidence, making him a 9/2 underdog, and the true fact of the matter is that this is not the Cotto of four or five years ago when he was one of the most dangerous fighters on the planet.

He does have the punching power to trouble Mayweather, who was rocked by Shane Mosley last year, but ‘Money’ is a classy operator who should have too much on the night. A master of defence, Mayweather will be able to pick off Cotto at will, and it is simply a matter of whether or not this fight goes the full 12 rounds before the American’s hand is raised (Mayweather 5/6 on points, 6/4 by knockout).

And when it is raised that old question will return; will Mayweather v Pacquiao happen? A showdown between the pair is one fight fans worldwide want to see. Some say Mayweather is ducking Pacquiao, others claim it is the other way around. Either way, something is stopping this fight from taking place and giving the current generation of boxing fans an iconic match that would sit alongside the historic contests of the past.

William Hill are offering 7/1 on Mayweather and Pacquiao finally colliding this year, with spokesperson Graham Sharpe telling Bettingpro.com: “If this fight is to be made surely it has to be sooner, rather than later. Despite Mayweather’s incarceration it is still not impossible that it could be fitted in during 2012.”
