The late and relentless Betfair gamble on Floyd Mayweather to beat Ricky Hatton in Las Vegas this morning – he was backed from 4-6 into 4-9 at the start of the fight on Betfair, with the Hitman available at 5-2 – proved spot on as the American won by a 10th round stoppage.

Other bookmakers were reporting that up to 90 per cent of bets in the run-up to the fight were for Hatton, at odds as low as 6-4.

But that was not mirrored on Betfair, as Hatton drifted from 7-4 to 5-2 on the betting exchange.

And Mayweather went on to show his class with a 10th round stoppage, available at 59-1 on Betfair.

Betfair spokesman Tony Calvin commented: “The Betfair market certainly saw that Mayweather performance coming, with literally millions forcing his price down from 4-6 yesterday morning into 4-9 at the opening bell.

“We saw just shy of £12m in traded volume in the outright market alone - with seven-figure sums also matched on the accompanying lines - so it was undoubtedly the biggest boxing betting contest in history.”
