Also, three of its four regular season wins came at Zalgirio Arena. Accordingly the Lithuanian champs need a home win to open the Top 16 to maximize their chances to fight for a play-off berth. Maccabi knows it will have to carve out a road win to increase its chances of reaching the playoffs for the seventh time in eight seasons and will be eager to do so in its first opportunity. The additions to the Zalgiris roster of forward Dainius Salenga and Reeves Nelson have lessened the roles of reserves Povilas Butkevicius and Mindaugas Kuzminskas. Maccabi is without small forward Guy Pnini, who has a calf muscle problem. Both teams hit the Top 16 with new looks. Zalgiris returned veteran Salenga and signed young forward Nelson, while Maccabi signed point guard Demond Mallet away from Spirou Charleroi. Mallet teams with Keith Langford to give Maccabi a potentially lethal backcourt, which Mantas Kalnietis, DeJuan Collins and Marko Popovic will all work to stop. At the other end, Sonny Weems has developed into Zalgiris’s go-to guy and his duel against Devin Smith could prove decisive. It is worthwhile to watch two of the strongest men in the game, Robertas Javtokas of Zalgiris and Sofoklis Schortsanitis of Maccabi, square off in the paint. Milovan Rakovic provides Zalgiris with a second powerful option against Big Sofo. Zalgiris power forward Paulius Jankunas is a game-changer when playing his best and goes against a player with a much different style in Lior Eliyahu. Two Maccabi players that have seen extended minutes in recent domestic games are guard Jon Scheyer and athletic big man Shawn James. It will be interesting to see if they have larger roles in the Euroleague too. Ultimately this game figures to be an exciting, up tempo and fun-to-watch affair in which we will learn a lot about both teams’ Top 16 chances.
