Sunday's NCAA Elite Eight

On Sunday March 29th, the NCAA Final Four will be set after the last two national quarterfinals are complete.

In the Midwest Regional final, the Louisville Cardinals will be the favorite against the Michigan State Spartans.

The overall number one seed in the entire tournament, it is very difficult to envision Louisville losing this game for a couple of reasons.  Firstly, they are the hottest team in the country, having won thirteen consecutive games often against very tough competition.  Secondly, rarely have the scores been close in any of those games although none was more convincing than their last victory over Arizona which was nearly a forty point margin.

Of course Michigan State is a good basketball team too - they wouldn't be in the Elite Eight if they were not - but they have exposed hints of vulnerability over the last month that Louisville has not exposed.  Michigan State, the number two seed in the Midwest Region, has been in tight games against weaker seeds in their last two victories.  Also, in the Big Ten conference tournament barely two weeks ago, Michigan State lost to Ohio State, a team that went out in the first round of the March Madness tournament to Siena (whom Louisville disposed of in the second round).

All the action is on Louisville to advance to the national championship game and to lose there.

In the South Regional final, North Carolina, the region's number one seed, will meet Oklahoma, the region's number two seed.

Ever since the return of Ty Lawson to the Tar Heels lineup, North Carolina has been an odds on favorite to win the national championship and they have answered that call so far in the tournament.  They have yet to be challenged and have posted very large spreads including a twenty-two point victory in the Sweet Sixteen against a tough Gonzaga team.  The only recent crack in the armour of North Carolina was a second round lost in the ACC tournament to Florida State, but keep in mind that the loss was close and that Ty Lawson, the ACC player of the year, was sitting out with his injured toe.

With some insight, Oklahoma, despite being a number two seed, has actually lost four of their last nine games.  For two of those losses, members of the team were quick to blame the absence of their star player, Blake Griffin.  However, unlike North Carolina who quickly returned to form when they got their star back, on Griffin's return Oklahoma still lost two of three prior to the start of the March Madness tournament.

Oklahoma, like Michigan State, is a very good team, but their recent history, like Michigan State's, has suggested vulnerability.

There is no reason to predict upsets on Sunday, as the number one seeds should win the day and advance to the Final Four.  Although odds are not available at time of writing, if you were going to pick Michigan State or Oklahoma to win, you might want to make a more conservative selection and simply pick them to cover the spread.  That way you might still have a winning ticket even if they lose, which they should.
