NCAA betting update - Connecticut Huskies odds on to win

Look for Walker to make one of the Big East's All Star teams at year's end.

The University of Connecticut was assumed, preseason, to have a much weaker team than what they had last season.  That assumption was mostly due to the departure of Hasheem Thabeet, the 7'3" 2nd overall pick from June's NBA draft.  Thabeet, never a prolific scorer, blocked 118 shots last year for UCONN while pulling down nearly 200 boards.

But the Connecticut Huskies have gotten off to a 3-0 start and while many will be quick to point out that they haven't played anyone all that good yet, even so - they've yet to be played close.

Jim Calhoun's squad returns key players in Kemba Walker, Jerome Dyson, Gavin Edwards, and Stanley Robinson.

Kemba Walker, a guard, is still a sophmore but those in the know are tipping him for the pros already.  He was an important part of last season's run to the Final Four for Connecticut and so far this season he has averaged nearly 15 points per game.  He was not a three point threat during his freshman year but so far this season he has dropped 4 of 9 and if he keeps that rate up, or even if it declines a bit, he'll help book Calhoun's 4th trip to the Final Four.

Look for Walker to make one of the Big East's All Star teams at year's end.

Dyson is a senior guard who is eating up tons of minutes while averaging 20 points per game and 6 assists per game so far.

Dyson has shown marked improvement during his career with Connecticut highlighted by his assists to turnovers ratio last season.  In both his freshman and sophmore seasons Dyson turned the ball over more often that he dished out assists but last year he improved on that DRASTICALLY with 76 assists and only 49 turnovers.  If he improves again this year and keeps the scoring high then he helps make Connecticut a very dangerous team.

Senior Gavin Edwards, a forward/centre, spent last season as 6th man for the Huskies but he would have started on nearly all other NCAA teams.  Edwards is only a little bit of a shot blocker but he's a very good rebounder with enough offensively to punish double teams.  He's a very important player for the Huskies to have because he adds  chemistry: he's not going to cry about not getting touches but when he gets them he'll do something with them.

Edwards should be keeping his more talented teammates open for 1 on 1 play as he can't be ignored by defenders when he's on the court.

Forward Stanley Robinson is a senior and needs to have a great year to improve his NBA draft pick ranking for next summer.  While he has always been a very good shot blocker and a very good rebounder, he has yet to demonstrate that he can score a lot of points at the NCAA level for a full season.  However, so far he has averaged nearly 17 points per game this season and if he stays close to that, and the other key players keep producing, Connecticut is a major threat for the Big East conference title and a number 1 or 2 seed when March Madness comes around.

UCONN's men's basketball team is ranked 12th in the Associated Press's Top 25.  But make sure you get in the know about this team: a lot of analysts have them higher in their polls and at least 1 fan poll has the Huskies as the top team in the nation.

The best thing about these Huskies is that they are priced at +4000 (40/1) in the futures market to win the NCAA title with Players Only.

They are a great team to sprinkle.

But if you are the 'wait and see' type then keep a couple games in the back of your mind.  Connecticut plays an unranked but solid LSU team next week. In December UCONN plays the highly ranked Kentucky Wildcats in Connecticut.

If UCONN puts up a double digit spread against LSU then don't wait any longer.  And if UCONN posts a win against Kentucky then pound the Huskies with a follow-up bet in the futures market (but by then you can kiss odds of +4000 (40/1) goodbye).
