The two teams are joined by reigning Euroleague champ Regal FC Barcelona in a fight for the top spot. Montepaschi enters the game atop the group standings with a 7-1 record – one victory more than its rivals – and is the only team that could theoretically clinch first place this week. But for that to happen, it would need to win and for Barcelona to lose earlier Thursday to Lietuvos Rytas.

Montepaschi’s only Turkish Airlines Euroleague loss this season came at the hands of Fenerbahce Ulker, 81-68 in Istanbul last month. The Turkish champs rolled out a balanced effort led by Mirsad Turkcan’s double-double as eight Fenerbahce players scored at least 7 points. Since then head coach Neven Spahija’s team has only gotten stronger inside with the signing of Sean May.

The Montepaschi-FB Ulker game features a spicy twist with the head-to-head duel of the Lavrinovic twin brothers, Ksistof of Montepaschi and Darjus of Fenerbahce. The former is relied upon a bit more by his team, but both are elite players that can make the difference on any given night.

Milovan Rakovic and Ksistof Lavrinovic are Montepaschi’s only true inside threats, as big men Shaun Stonerook and Tomas Ress prefer to stretch defenses with their outside shooting. The visitors counter with a formidable frontline rotating the likes of Darjus Lavrinovic, Turkcan, May, Oguz Savas and Kaya Peker. The Italian champs have added some scoring punch with the return from injury of Malik Hairston, who joins Rimantas Kaukenas and Pietro Aradori as scoring threats from the wings. Marco Carraretto and David Moss also play big minutes as defensive stoppers.

FB Ulker is just as deep at the “two” and “three” positions with Marko Tomas as the chief scorer and Omer Onan and Tarence Kinsey considered elite defenders. Forward Emir Preldzic is also a factor as a constant mismatch threat at small forward. However on teams with so many weapons, the most important players could be the point guards and two of the league’s best – and fastest – square off in this game with two more elite reserves backing them up.

All-Euroleague playmaker Bo McCalebb is the heart of the Montepaschi effort on both sides of the floor, leading his team in scoring, assists and steals. Former Euroleague champ Nikos Zisis gives head coach Simone Pianigiani a heady option to play behind or alongside McCalebb. Fener’s Roko Ukic, the team’s leader in points and assists, is a master at breaking down defenses with his penetration, but also a superb outside shooter. Lynn Greer is a former Euroleague scoring champ and an ace at crunch time.

All signs point to a great exhibition of Euroleague Basketball between two teams from the highest levels that are eager for first place in their group now, but could end up meeting again for much bigger stakes further on down the line.
