Boomers, Opals London-bound

The Opals are headed to London
The Australian men's and women's basketball teams are heading to next year's London Olympics. This was made possible after they beat their respective New Zealand counterparts in the FIBA Oceania Championship in Brisbane last night.

The Boomers breezed past the Tall Blacks 81-64 while the Opals trimmed the Tall Ferns 92-73. 

Brad Newley led the way for the men's team with 12 points, six rebounds and three assists. Andrew Ogilvy added 11 points while Aleks Maric had nine points and eight rebounds. Kirk Penney led New Zealand with 17 points.

The Opals, meanwhile, drew big numbers from Suzy Batkovic, Abby Bishop and Elyse Penaluna as they swept the Tall Ferns in their best-of-three series. 

Batkovic finished with 19 points and nine rebounds while Elyse Penaluna had 17 points and eight rebounds. Penaluna added 17 points and eight rebounds. 

Natalie Taylor and Micaela Cocks led New Zealand with 17 points each.
