The 2011 World Series gets under way on Wednesday when the Texas Rangers visit the St Louis Cardinals in Game One of Major League Baseball’s best-of-seven showpiece.

The Rangers (1.662 Pinnacle Sports) made it to the World Series against the San Francisco Giants last season, but won just one game in the best-of-seven set and watched the championship go to the Californians in Game Five. Texas will be looking to make up for that performance starting on Wednesday when they're in St Louis to begin the World Series against the Cardinals (2.370).

Texas knocked out the Tigers in the American League Championship Series in Game Six on Saturday night, winning in convincing fashion 15-5 at home. Nelson Cruz hit his sixth home run of the series for the Rangers in that victory, while Michael Young also homered and drove in five runs in the game. Cruz won the ALCS MVP thanks to his six home runs and 13 RBI in the series, helping to bail out a Texas pitching staff that gave up five or more runs in three of six games.

The Rangers could turn to either C.J. Wilson or Colby Lewis for Game 1 on Wednesday. Left-hander Wilson, who won 16 games during the regular season with a 2.94 ERA, hasn't been as effective in the postseason – where he's 0-2 with a no-decision over three outings with an 8.04 ERA.

Wilson lost Game 5 of the ALCS to the Tigers, surrendering six runs on eight hits over six innings while fanning five. Lewis, who is expected to pitch in Game Two of the World Series if he doesn't take the mound in Game 1, was also tagged with a loss by the Tigers in the ALCS, allowing four runs on eight hits over 5 2-3 innings. In two playoff starts the right-hander is 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA; he held the Rays to one run on one hit over six innings back in the ALDS.

Chris Carpenter is the expected starter on Wednesday night at home for the Cardinals, who put up double-digit runs in their Game 6 win over the Brewers to clinch the National League Championship Series on Sunday night. Albert Pujols, David Freese, and Rafael Furcal all hit home runs for St. Louis in Sunday's win.

Right-hander Carpenter is 2-0 with a no-decision so far in the playoffs with a 3.71 ERA; he threw a three-hit shutout in the clincher against the Phillies in the NLDS, then held the Brewers to three runs on six hits over five innings of work in his only NLCS outing.

Game Two of the World Series will also be in St Louis on Thursday night, with Games Three, Four, and Five all in Texas on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. If Game Six is required that'll be played in St Louis next Wednesday, while a deciding Game Seven would be next Thursday.
