Richmond coach Damien Hardwick is optimistic that his players will be able to turn their competitive performances into a victory over high-flying West Coast this weekend.

Richmond are 3.25 at bet365 to win on home turf on Sunday, with West Coast 1.35 to secure the victory.

The Tigers have dropped games to big teams such as Carlton, Collingwood and Geelong this season, but all of them were respectable defeats in which Hardwick's charges showed a lot of positive qualities.

The results may not have been good for them, but Hardwick believes his side has already shown that they are a vastly improved unit this term.

"There is no doubt we've improved. We certainly had chances in that last quarter (against Geelong on Sunday), but that's the reality of the game, you make mistakes and learn," Hardwick said.

The 2012 fixture list hasn't been kind to Richmond, whose opening four matches of this season were all against top teams.

But instead of being negative about it, the Tigers boss feels that it provided his young troops the chance to test themselves against the very best.

Hardwick continued: "It's always a good way to start your program in a way. We were hoping we'd pinch a few games early, we've fallen short in a number of areas, but we've been really happy with our form overall.

"We're playing a better style of footy than last year, we've just got to make sure we get over the top of one of these sides."
