AFL Wooden Spoon betting - GWS Giants favourites to win

Despite winning their first game, the GWS Giants are still favourites to win the wooden spoon, drifting from $1.10 to $1.62 after Saturday’s win with online bookmaker sportsbet.com.au.

Gold Coast have been the big movers after their surprise loss, firming from $10 to $3.00 at sportsbet.com.au while the winless Melbourne Demons have also firmed significantly from $17 to $4.50.

Port Adelaide have also moved from $67 to $16, while the Brisbane Lions are into $101 from $501.

“The market suggests that GWS will still claim the spoon and 90% of all spoon betting has been on them, but the fact that they have a win on the board has seen some of the other weaker teams come in,” sportsbet.com.au’s Shaun Anderson told Bettingpro.com

“When you have two teams who are yet to win a game like Melbourne and Gold Coast, they have to be looked at very closely as a legitimate chance to win the spoon. But $1.62 is easily the longest odds the Giants have been, so there could be some more interest in them.”

One punter in particular will be keeping a close eye on the Giants, placing a bet of $20,000 at $1.30 for them to win the spoon when the market first opened last year.
