For Kvitova her 6-4, 6-3 win over Sharapova marks the beginning of what promises to be a long career at the top of women's tennis but for the sport it marks the end of an era. The Czech become only the fifth player in the last twelve years to win the Wimbledon title and she is the first new winner since Amelie Mauresmo in 2006.

Sharapova, who won the title back in 2004, can take heart from her performance, with her appearance in the final of a Grand Slam ending three years of pain and suffering due to a shoulder injury, which almost forced her to retire. The Russian is back in the top five of the world rankings and she will certainly have more opportunities to win major titles in the near future.

The day, however, belonged to Kvitova, who dominated the match on Centre Court with a composure and clam which is seldom seen from a first time Grand Slam finalist. The 21-year-old claimed an early break in the first set and then simply served out for the match and she consistently dictated the pace of the match with some powerful, accurate hitting and a slow backhand slice, which Sharapova never got to grips with.

The Czech began the second set with another break of serve and raced into a 2-0 lead but Sharapova battled back to level. The Russian could now, however, hold her own serve and more breaks from Kvitova gave her a 5-4 lead and she served out in style, winning her final game to love and finishing with her first ace of the match.

After the match Kvitova spoke of her delight at winning the match and claiming her first Grand Slam title and in a transition period for women's tennis, she now has the opportunity to assert her dominance over the likes of Caroline Wozniacki, Vera Zvonareva and Victoria Azarenka, who are all yet to win major honours, for years to come.
