The Masters: Woods 40/1 for Par-3 Contest

Related Articles

Augusta is steeped in tradition and the Par-3 Contest has been part of Masters week since 1960, when it was won by Sam Snead with a four under par score of 23. Since then, it has been traditionally played on the Wednesday before the tournament starts over nine holes, measuring just over 1,000 yards. Players competing that week, non-competing champions, and honorary invitees are invited to take part. What’s more, you can actually bet on it with Paddy Power, who go 33/1 the field.

Padraig Harrington has won the competition twice before, which might explain why he’s 33/1 co-favourite, but as to why Luke Donald, Vijay Singh and Adam Scott. are the same price is anyone's guess - feel free to post your comment. At 40/1, you’ve got the likes of Geoff Ogilvy, Jim Furyk, Stewart Cink, last year’s Masters champion Zach Johnson - and a certain Tiger Woods, who is rumoured to be able to play a bit.

Even old-timers Fuzzy Zoeller and Gary Player are expected to take part, and they might be worth a quid or two at 100/1 and 150/1 respectively as age has been no barrier to success in the past. The inaugural winner Snead won the contest again in 1974, at age 61, and nearly won a third time in 1991, at age 78, but dumped his tee shot into a pond on the first hole of a four-man playoff.!

Recent winners (winning score):

2007 Mark O'Meara (22
2006 Ben Crane (23)
2005 Jerry Pate (22)
2004 Padraig Harrington (21)
2003 Padraig Harrington (21) & David Toms (21)
2002 Nick Price (22)
2001 David Toms (22)
2000 Chris Perry (23)

As you’d expect, there’s been plenty of holes-in-one in the history of the contest; 63 to be exact, with a record five of them in 2002. Skybet go 1/3 (9/4 no hole in one) for that eventuality this year and 5/4 that the winner is determined after a playoff (4/7 no playoff). They also go 28/1 that the winner of goes on to wear the green jacket. A word of warning, however, no winner of the par-3 competition has won the Masters in the same year, although Raymond Floyd, winner of the par-3 in 1990, went close when losing in a sudden-death playoff to Nick Faldo.
