Stoke City manager Tony Pulis has avoided a driving ban…after claiming that losing his licence could get the team relegated!

The Potters are 14 points above the drop zone after their 1-1 draw with Tottenham. But Pulis’ solicitor argued in court that if the boss could not drive, it would harm the club’s chances of staying in the Premier League.

After a speeding offence committed following a 5-0 defeat to Bolton, Pulis exceeded 12 points on his licence which should have earned him an automatic ban.

But according to The Sun, his lawyer argued that Stoke’s ability to buy players could be affected if Pulis had to use a chauffeur who then discovered and disclosed details about potential transfers.

The punishment could, argued the solicitor, damage the reputation of Stoke City’s business investors and cause distress to the charities Pulis supports.

“They would suffer if they were relegated as a result, and the children who he would not be able to assist and the people of Stoke could suffer if Mr Pulis lost his licence,” said solicitor Mike Stephenson.

Pulis was instead punished with a £2,500 fine.

Stoke’s next match is on Saturday evening at home to title-chasing Manchester City, for which Bet365 make them 5/1 to pull off a shock win.
