The two wins mean that the Welsh Potting Machine takes a maximum six points and joins fellow countryman Matthew Stevens at the top of the table.

Williams first saw off Jimmy White with an unconvincing 3-0 victory, in a game that saw both players struggle to find consistency.

Williams did however kick off with a 105 break to win frame one, before White failed to take his chances and allowed the world number one to steal the frame.

He wrapped up the win with a 60 break to book his place in the final and leave the Whirlwind pointless from his two games played so far.

The second semi-final saw Shaun Murphy clinch a deciding frame to win the grudge match against Ronnie O'Sullivan, avenging his 7-1 defeat in last year's grand final at the hands of the rocket.

O'Sullivan, cheered on by Rolling Stone guitarist Ronnie Wood, took a narrow opening frame. The Rocket led 45-0 in the second but Murphy hit back to win it with runs of 36 and 26.

O'Sullivan then capitalised on a vital missed green from Murphy to lead 2-1, but the 2005 world champion bounced back in emphatic style, with breaks of 115 and 85 to win the match in the final frame under the high pressure Shootout rules.

Murphy began the final in a positive fashion, making 65 in frame one, but it wasn't enough as Williams won it with a cool 44 clearance. Murphy did however level up after leading 51-0 in the second frame.

Frame three saw both players waste chances, Williams eventually seizing the opportunity to clear from last red to pink and go in front 2-1.

The decisive moment came when Murphy missed a mid-range red early in frame four, allowing Williams to step up to the plate with an excellent 101 clearance to seal victory.

"I'm really pleased to get off to a good start and to play well," said Williams. "It wasn't easy and there were a few close frames. I nicked a couple of frames that Shaun should have won."

"I'm off to China for the Shanghai Masters tomorrow so it's nice to get a win under my belt and get some more confidence. Hopefully I can keep it going and have a good run," he added.

Semi-finals:

Mark Williams 3-0 Jimmy White
105-1 (Williams 105), 61-30, 82-5 (Williams 60)

Shaun Murphy 3-2 Ronnie O'Sullivan
48-63; 71-45; 49-68; 115-6 (Murphy 115), 91-0 (Murphy 85)

Final:

Mark Williams 3-1 Shaun Murphy
67-65 (Murphy 65), 14-66, 62-47; 118-6 (Williams 101)
