Swiss centre-back told to prove his worth

Arsene Wenger has confirmed central defender Philipe Senderos, who was almost sold to Everton in a £6 million summer transfer, will start Tuesday’s Carling Cup tie against Championship leaders West Brom.

Wenger said of the 24 year-old Swiss defender, who was online at AC Milan last season: “His position is, we have four centre-backs and he is one of them, because Djourou is out for nearly the season”.

The Frenchman laid out the challenge to Senderos to impress on Tuesday night by adding “In this job you have always to be ready and the day you get the chance you can do well”.

Arsenal are expected to field a much changed side from the one which beat Wigan at the weekend, with Senderos joined by youngsters Kieran Gibbs, Jack Wilshire and Aaron Ramsey in the starting eleven.
