Andrea Petkovic will face Sloane Stephens tonight in the quarter-finals of the Mercury Insurance Open.

Second seed Andrea Petkovic has made it through to the quarter-finals of this week’s Mercury Insurance Open with real efficiency, and as yet she hasn’t lost a set. She beat Alexa Glatch 6-3, 6-4 in round two, before securing a 6-2, 3-0
retirement victory over Virginie Razzano in the third round.

Petkovic’s quarter-final opponent will be Sloane Stephens of America. Stephens is only 18 years-old, but she’s made a superb impression here in Carlsbad. She managed to get past seventh seed Julia Goerges in the second round, before being handed an early retirement win against Tamira Paszek in round three. She’ll enter this clash as the underdog, but Stephens could really trouble Petkovic tonight.

This will be the first competitive meeting between Stephens and Petkovic, and it should be worth keeping an eye on. The German should be able to do enough to get through to the semi-finals, but Stephens will be eager to maintain her run here.

The winner of this matchup will face either Agnieszka Radwanska or Daniela Hantuchova in the final four.
