Cycling is a sport that has grown immensely in popularity since Bradley Wiggins won the 2012 Tour de France, with the Brit claiming victory with Team Sky before collecting a gold medal at the 2012 Olympics.

Wiggins will return to defend his Tour crown in 2013, although team-mate Chris Froome could once again be rivalling him for honours, especially as it appears the latter will be the lead man for the British team.

Aside from the summer Olympics, the Tour de France is the most popular cycling event from a betting point-of-view, with the bookmakers offering customers the chance to bet on the outright market as well as each individual stage of the event.

The fact that many stages last several hours means there is also the chance to bet In-Play on the stage which can often be a fascinating experience as customers watch the contenders battling it out before deciding which cyclist they are going to back.

Big-priced winners regularly happen in the sport of cycling

There are often big shocks when it comes to the outcome of cycling races, with Alexandre Vinokourov obliging at odds of 66/1 to win the gold medal in the men’s road race at the 2012 Olympic Games.

Mark Cavendish and Peter Sagan were the two favourites to win that particular race although they were among the riders caught out by the lead group breaking away and the sizeable gap ended up being too big to bridge.

Rigoberto Uran nearly caused an even bigger upset as he claimed the silver medal in the same race, with the Colombian having been 150/1 to win the race before it started and an even bigger price In-Play.

Bradley Wiggins was a much shorter price to win the 2012 Tour de France at odds of 5/2 and they soon shortened as the Team Sky rider got off to a fast start in this event, especially as Cadel Evans didn’t mount a serious challenge to the Brit and the Australian ended up finishing in seventh place.

In addition to the general classification, there was the chance to bet on points classification, King of the Mountains and the best Young Rider, with Peter Sagan, Thomas Voeckler and Tejay van Garderen claiming victory in these respective categories.

There is also the chance to bet on the Giro d’Italia which is another prestigious multiple-stage bicycle race that is held in Italy. Several Italians have claimed the overall prize including Ivan Basso and Michele Scarponi in recent years, although there was a surprise winner in 2012 when Ryder Hesjedal of Canada claimed the spoils.
