Many people enjoy betting on athletics, with the sport proving highly popular during 2012 thanks to the London Olympics which saw a highly successful event staged in the English capital.

The 2012 Olympics broke betting records when it came to customers placing pre-event and In-Play bets on the athletics, with many people enjoying a winning double on Usain Bolt and Mo Farah after they both claimed two gold medals in their respective individual races.

Betting customers win big on Usain Bolt and Mo Farah

Bolt was available at 6/4 to win both the 100m and 200m events, with the Jamaican proving to be the star of the sprints, while Farah was available at 6/1 to claim a double gold before amazingly claiming victory in not only the 5000m but also the 10000m event.

While athletics is not the most popular betting sport, it can often be exciting to bet on big events like the Diamond League, Olympics and World Championships. The bookmakers always create betting markets for the big meetings, with odds available for the men and women’s events.

You can often bet on a particular race without the favourite. So for example, there might be a 100m market without Usain Bolt where you are getting better odds with the Jamaican superstar being taken out of the equation.

There is also the chance to sometimes bet on a straight forecast where you predict which two athletes will be first and second home in a particular race. Extending this further, firms often give customers a chance to bet on a tricast where you predict the first three to cross the finishing line.

Longer events like the 5000m, 10000m and the marathon allow customers the chance to strike In-Play bets on the action, with the marathon a particular captivating live betting event based on the fact that the race can last over two hours.

There are also some special markets that the bookmakers create, such as how many gold medals Great Britain might win at a particular event. You might also get the chance to bet on whether Jessica Ennis will break the world record for the women’s heptathlon or whether the GB relay team will drop the baton in the relay.

People like multiple bets on the athletics

Accumulator bets are popular when it comes to athletics due to the fact that many runners often have short odds which means that you can make more money by placing individuals into a multiple bet.

So for example, if five different athletes are available at even money to win their event and you put them in an accumulator, you would essentially get odds of 31/1 about them winning which means you can place a smaller stake rather than having to put a bigger amount down to win some money.
